R2D2

R2D2!!!! This cake took so much for us to do and almost caused us a few heat attacks. Alida even got up in the middle of the night to check on it. Alida baked 14 8 inch cakes and Brandy kneaded 5 batches of fondant on the hottest day of the year. We had been planning this cake for a few months for our boys that were born within 2 weeks of each other and are best friends. All the work that this cake took was worth it to see the boys' faces that day. This cake was stood over two feet. We used 14, 8 inch cakes and 5 batches of fondant. It took us over 18 hours including bake time.We really have no special tips or tricks for this cake other then planning, team work and patience's pay off!!!

Watermelon for all!

Who needs a cake when you LOVE watermelon? Alida's little guy LOVES watermelon and doesn't really like cake. Alida decided to make a huge melon cake, she peeled a watermelon, cored and peeled a (1/2)cantaloupe and stacked them. Then she decorated with strawberries, grapes, leftover cantalouope and pineapple. He loved it. She also made watermelon cake pops. White cake dyed pink with cookie bits and dipped into white then green chocolate. Remember when doing cake pops that cool cake and icing work best to form balls. Alida learned that fruit stick to fruit so she didn't need any tooth picks to decorate the watermelon.

Christian Grey

This post has been haunting my dreams lol. I (Brandy) usually dream about my creations, whether it be cakes, crafts or scrapping. A project will haunt me until I figure it out This was one of those creations. After seeing it on Pintrest I wanted to make it so bad. Of course whoever pinned it didn't pin the site so Alida and I had to go on our own creativity, we seem to work best that way.We also wanted to change a few things that would make the cake  truer to the book then the one we found on Pintrest. We made it for a friends stagette which was themed after the books 50 shades of Grey. We had a sex party, went on a scavanger hunt with prizes such as handcuffs, feather boas and more. We had yummy purple martini's and appys, it was a ton of fun. Well back to the cake! I'm sure every woman out there has a dream man, well we made ours out of cake. He was complete with hand cuffs, light wash denim jeans, grey tie, and abs of perfection. We started with two baked chocolate cakes, butter cream, and fondant. Alida baked the yummy cakes and butter cream icing and I made all the colored fondant. Alida shaped the bottom layer into a torso and used the second cake to add abs and pectorals. We then worked together covering the cake with fondant. We used a few new techniques this time. We used a rubbing technique with food coloring to destress Christians jeans and add his well defined muscles. We also used a roller tool to add detail to the jeans and belt. Alida added all the detail to the cuffs and tie by hand. We learned that you need a really stiff cake or it crumbles everywhere.

My little Tea Pot

For K's 3rd Birthday I (Brandy) made a Tea Pot Cake. I had it all planned out. I was going to use chocolate for the spout and handle, As soon as I had it all made and ready to put onto the cake the chocolate broke. On to plan b. I made them out of fondant the spout worked out and was fine as I pushed the skewers into it and as I pushed it into the cake (which was already iced) However when I went to put in the handle it busted into little pieces. Onto plan C for the spout. I though and thought about the problem and finally it hit me. Licorice! so I sent the hubs up to the gas station for one piece of licorice. I stuck it into the cake and iced and decorated my little tea pot. This cake was also my first attempt at butter cream flowers. All in all I was pleased with how it turned out. Remember that when decorating cakes things go wrong and you have to stay on your toes and use many different things to make your vision a reality.

Helpful Tips

We know everyone is anxiously awaiting posts of our most recent cakes. We wanted to show that we had to start some where and that we have learned a ton over the last 5 years. A few tips we have learned and we feel need to be shared are:

1)ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS read and follow your recipe. If it calls for BUTTER use BUTTER don't cut corners or think that another ingredient is good enough.. IT calls for a specific ingredient for a reason.

2) If your house is above 20 degrees Celsius plan to work in stages and work quickly. Chocolate and butter cream icing melts fast and fondant will sweat and be slippery and hard to control. We usually decorate in stages and our fridge is set to almost freezing. That being said if fondant gets to cold it WILL CRACK.

3) When using fondant or any icing always make more then you need. It's better to have to much rather than too little.

4) Google is your best friend and worst enemy. You can look up recipes and tips but remember you are looking on the WORLD wide web and everywhere is different from ingredients and supplies  to humidity and weather. So know and remember while something works for someone it may not work for you.

We saved the best for last.
HAVE FUN don't stress about it. Just have fun!
